Department of Pneumology, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and Thomayer University Hospital

The Department of Pneumology is one of the largest specialized centers for respiratory medicine in the Czech Republic. 

Established in 2003, it provides comprehensive preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care for patients with respiratory diseases. 

Since 2016, the department has been led by Prof. Martina Koziar Vašáková, MD, PhD, who is also active in research, teaching, and publishing.

The department specializes in lung cancer, severe airway obstruction including asthma, interstitial lung diseases, pleural disorders, immune-related conditions, and infectious lung diseases such as tuberculosis and its resistant forms. 

It also operates national referral centers for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis, as well as a Center for Tobacco Dependence.

Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services include a 24/7 bronchoscopy unit, continuous outpatient care, and evaluation for long-term home oxygen therapy. 

In cooperation with thoracic surgery, oncology, and radiology departments, the clinic provides comprehensive care for patients with complex and severe pulmonary conditions.

As a teaching and training center of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, the department plays a key role in educating medical students and postgraduate physicians, while maintaining strong national and international collaborations.
